This looks like a very real possibility. I've got three main questions.

    1. How on earth can I build a case like that, or what options exist for building a case like this?

In a machine shop. They provide the 3D drawings. If they're open-licensing (or even closed-licensing) this, then there might be somebody building and selling the case, as well.

Might also want to look at the recently open-sourced Facebook plans. They've open-licensed and open-sourced their entire datacenter, including the servers they build themselves.

But I suspect there are plenty of products available like this off the shelf. It's just some sheet metal and off-the-shelf circuit boards.

    2. What type of software is available to run something like this, assuming I have a working knowledge of Linux (GUI Versions)?

Any Linux distribution. All it is is a high-density PC with a whole BUNCH of SATA drives plugged-in. If you want a GUI, plug in a video card.

    3. What are the pros/cons of a setup like this compared to just getting a storage array and connecting it to a Mac Pro considering the fact that I want to be able to pull data from this remotely.

It IS a storage array. Implemented as a Linux server.

However, any RAID is just going to be software RAID. It's just a BOD. (= "bunch of drives")

...And doesn't 4GB of ram seem like too little?

They're just using it as a file server. It isn't doing anything else. I'm assuming they determined that 4GB is sufficient for filesystem cache, given the possible throughput of the drives and network interface.

BTW, hot-plugging SATA drives works just fine in current Linux kernels. I do it all the time. I have a couple of carrier-less SATA docks on the front of my Linux system. You open a little door, pop in the bare SATA drive, close the door and in a few seconds the system recognizes the drive. I'm not using RAID - I just do this for making backups. SATA is designed for hot-plugging, assuming the backplane is designed for that. Of course, you should flush and dismount any filesystems on the drive before removing. I'm assuming in a software RAID configuration, you'd be able to hotplug the drives and that would be recognized and the array would be re-built.

If you do this, make sure you use very, very, very reliable fans! The fans fail, and this system is toast. Literally!

Nice thing is, this all fits in 4U, so it's cheap colo.

I just got off the phone with the 75 and Park Lane store in Dallas and set up my appointment for 7am tomorrow morning. I was #22 and ordered a 32GB black iPhone. The manager told me they got about half of what they ordered and confirmed that they received 60 16GB black iPhones. She was in a hurry and I didn't get a chance to ask her if she got any white or how many 32GB black she got in. She also told me that they will only be selling iPhones to those who preordered. She wasn't sure of the exact number but believed that around 130 people had preordered at her location.

While it's an interesting concept and lot's of people might end up using it, I don't know if it would serve a great purpose for me. How about an OLED keyboard on the portables... that would be something cool.

Those posts are misguided. Liquid metal is no darker than aluminum in its default state. The SIM ejection tool is quite a light shade of grey, I have one for my 3GS.

I figured that when I went onto the original company's website saw the raw metal on their homepage. :)

Probably a good way to kill someone, probably not the ideal way to deal with an argument, though.
Obviously you don't play it to win it.

Not any more than I can hold that her own stupidity led to this as well.

Like I said previously, putting yourself in harm's way should not in any way absolve you from blame for what happens. When you use yourself as a human shield, you're going to get hurt - why should it be the other guy's fault? When was the last time you tried to jump off the front of a moving vehicle?

...unlike like traditional rice wines such as sake...

Actually, sake is brewed like beer, not fermented like wine. It does drink like a wine, though. Thus the confusion.

Increased marketshare is good, up to a point. Also, if world marketshare is staying the same, but the US is increasing, somewhere in the world apple is becoming less popular.

There is zero logic to that assertion. It sounds like it came from Fox News.

Plus you can just sell the 4 on ebay or something, if the iPhone 5 comes out soon there after. It'll fetch the same price or a little less than the iPhone 5's non-contract price. So you can just buy a non-contract iPhone 5 and use that as the hardware on your current iPhone line. It's one way to get around renewing your contract for 2 more years and paying fees.

But aren't you just assuming that there will be a "No Contract" price option either on the white iP4 or 5 for that matter?
Please correct me if I am wrong but there never used to bea no contract option. That was something that came to be later on and there is no guarantee that it will be available on the new phones. RIGHT?

Horrible! I feel for you man. Why such a silly limit?

It's leftover from Prohibition. Heck, the state didn't even officially legalize alcohol again until the 50s.

What good is a state where you cant crack open an Old English for your dead homies? sad very sad

Oddly enough, malt liquor seems to be exempt from that law. All the finer malt liquors, including Olde English, Colt 45, and Mickey's are widely available. I think they have their own category for some reason. I also think they don't enforce the law that closely. I believe Rogue Dead Guy, for example, is around 6%, but it is easily available. Also, I have seen quite a few beers in the 5.something range around, so it doesn't seem to be a hard 5% cap.

Good god man. That's reason enough to move!

I'm working on it. :) I've been ramping up the job hut lately. I have been avoiding it, but I think I may wind up in DFW. At least I have a free place to crash there for a while. At least until the sis-in-law gets sick of me, that is.

This isn't really all that shocking to be honest. The costs of new tech are always higher at first, but when a big player finally pushes it, the prices drop dramatically.

True, but Portal 2 is released for both MacOSX and Windows. :|

:) I bought it for Windows as such. No question, Window's allows the BEST gaming experience...both in hardware support, and W7:DX11 > OSX:OpenGL

My real beef is that Apple doesnt compliment its wonderfully built machines with capable GPU's. I mean, a 5750 as the best graphics option in the otherwise superb (might I add expensive) 27inch iMac? Total Fail. Im not looking for them to kick PWR consumption totally, but they could easily facilitate something as powerful as a 560ti or dare I say a 6850.

With Vista going to computer manufacturers now, I highly doubt that it will be pushed all the way into the summer. Although it is Microsoft, and this IS Vista, but I still don't think it would happen. MS would release it anyway and a crapload of updates following if necessary.

I think Leopard is farther away than many speculate. If Apple really wanted to release it right in January, you would think they would want a bigger hoopla to build the hype, which would have to happen almost immediately. Even then, you would think as neared completion we probably would have gotten a rumor or leak concerning the supposed top secret features by now. While I have nothing but gut feeling to go on, I think it'll be *really* previewed at MacWorld with a release, maybe March or April, possibly into May.

And that would make more sense. Let Vista's dust settle, let the bitching commence, maybe even a couple highly publicized virus or spyware incidents, then swoop in with Leopard, showing that even after MS had 5 years of development to rip off OSX, Apple is still ahead of them. That would give time for hype, and give Apple the press coverage. Not only is it likely, it makes sense.

For Summer read Winter in the US and for Autumn read Spring in the US.

What's that bootcamp icon you have there? Can you just run Windows right there on your Mac without rebooting?

No, I have it installed via bootcamp. I have reboot to use Windows. I am not a fan of virtualization.

And that icon is just something i found doing a google search.

time machine back up to cloud? yeah? what stops apple cracking that open to see what im up to?

    The Law?

What stops a burglar from robbing your mac or external HD, or from a spyware program from logging your key strokes.

I honestly don't see the problem...

I'm currently downloading this using HiDownload. Its going at about 7k/s though (I'm not sure if it's kilobits or bytes - I think bytes). I have just over 7MB downloaded. It's going to take a while. I believe that this is 350kb/s, and the video is 1 hour and 25 minutes, which is 5100 seconds. That means 1,785,000 kilobits, or 218MB.

BTW - I've never used HiDownload before so I'm not sure how it will turn out. If I do get it successfully downloaded, I will make a torrent of it and also put it up on Youtube.

Best Buy sells all of the big name phones for all major carriers, and they have a dedicated section of the store for mobile phone purchases, so they can easily activate your phone or look up your existing contract. I've had several phones activated at Best Buy and not once have I had a problem.

*** Where is the best place to pre-order at? Or is it better just to wait in line at one of the stores and get it that day? If you pre-order, you won't get it on launch day, 24th, will you?

@300D: your conclusion about X1900GT is based on PC world scores.
No difference. Same hardware, only the firmware is changed.

Most of barefeats benches (gaming) are pointing that 7800 is faster than X1900GT, esp. in higher resolutions. 7800GTX 512MB (flashed) has 8 pipes more and twice RAM than X1900GT (24 vs 16).
Too bad its still slower, I've tried it and the X1900 is better in every category.

and can't think of any apps I would use that would even recognize more than 2 cores.
FYI, EVERY application run in OSX natively takes advantage of multi-cpus.
Even on a G4, OSX will make every attempt to load the CPUs evenly no matter the application. There are only a few very rare instances where the work can't be split up, and most of them are limited to photoshop's outdated tools.
