I'm amazed that no-one is seeing the very dangerous path we could be heading down here. Will people only see it when it's too late?

Are we looking into the jaws of the future where you pay, but never OWN anything? Music, Movies, Apps.

You pay to have the right to listen/watch/use the data.

The data is never downloaded to your device to do as you wish, it's always held by the owners. or distributors.

I can see this coming like a flashing red warning sign.

You're being alarmist. Besides what does it matter to you if you "own" a copy of a song, just as long as the overall cost of use is the same or less? Competition will always moderate costs. I suggest you get more sleep and relax.

Funny, I just read in USA Today I beleve it was, that law enforcement officers actually prefer people use the apps...saying that even if the app alerts the driver and they change their driving habits for a short time, say, slowing them down from speeding for a few miles...it's a good thing, and they encourage it.
Besides...who the h*ll is the government to tell Apple what they can and cannot do with their business? Regulations are one thing...such as safety regs and such...those are needed, but Christ...this is over the line.

This has been reported on multiple times. Even before apps certain stretches of road are well known for the speed traps they (usually) have. The result is people always slow down (annoyingly to like 10 mph UNDER the speed limit) just in case the cop is there. Same thing with the apps. People go "Oh no! a speed trap!" and slow down. Since the purpose of the speed traps is to enforce speed limits it still works for them, they just don't get any money for the tickets.

Wonder if the top of the line Core i7 Sandy Bridge iMac will be faster than many of the SP Mac Pro configurations.

It'll be faster than the quad core models for sure and is comparable to the 3.33Ghz 6-core model as shown in these benchmarks (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=142).

So if Apple losses can they just go and make a really, really crummy, crash prone application that sells MP3, that are encoded really poorly, and is just the most absolutely worst garbage ever and call it, "Da Amazon MP3 and AppStore for Windows and Office" ?

While I do think Apple's TM should be upheld, I do wish they would change the name themselves.

If Apple made a new handheld with PDA, video, and audio features based around the iPod innovations... I'm there man, I'd so buy one.

What about cell phone capabilities too? :p ;)

Microsoft doesn't really play in the consumer / gadget / toy market, which simply means that you don't get to see most of their products unless you work in a corporate data center. And unlike Apple, Microsoft -has- data center / server products that people WANT to use and that are years ahead of the pack (Sharepoint Portal Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server, Terminal Services, just to name a few) - and a LOT of their RD goes there.

    This sounds like "sour grapes."

Also, nobody here should kid themselves - Microsoft still OWNS the desktop and office suite markets. Around a BILLION computers run their software, and even most Macs are dead in the water without Microsoft Office and/or Microsoft Windows (in Boot Camp, Parallels, Fusion, VirtualBox).

That's the whole point. Microsoft owns the desktop and office suite markets, yet, Microsoft is unwilling to move on to markets that have more potential to grow.

So Apple was more profitable in the last quarter. Big deal. Somebody with enough time on their hands might want to analyze the spending behavior and amount of staff and level of salaries to find out -WHY- that was the case. Maybe the guys at Microsoft have higher salaries and more vacation. Maybe Ballmer put more money into RD and marketing than in the last quarter. Maybe they bought more startups than before.

Nice try, but you're dead wrong here. Apple already beat Microsoft in revenue a couple of quarters ago. So don't even try to chalk it up to Apple being "cheap." Apple has already beaten Microsoft in Revenue.

Actually, who cares. Both companies are extremely profitable, but Microsoft has been profitable for a couple of decades more than Apple (who almost died in the 1990s while Microsoft was making more money than anybody else).

Now this is trying to make light of the matter. Apple beat out what was once the world's largest tech company. When Apple's market cap surpassed Microsoft's, people called Apple overvalued. They still call Apple overvalued. Now, Apple has beaten Microsoft in profits.

You are also stuck in current times. Physical media will be dead by then, everything is going to be cloud based, there will be no such thing as a physical copy of movies any more :)

The bottleneck is internet speed. Until the world has South Korean-esque internet speeds, physical media isn't going anywhere.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. Applestores must be filled with cash. I would think one would be a bit easier to rob than a bank.

I doubt they leave large amounts of cash in the stores over night.

Aplenty needs to clean up their act here.
Rogue isn't a small homegrown company, they deserve to be respected. With policies like this, the App Store might just eventually die.

I hope it dies. It's an abomination among software development.

I think we'll see the New C2D MacBook's appear on the Apple.com homepage on the 19th, and the following Monday at the event, Apple will announce the New MacBook Pro's with the MacBook style keyboard, and the magnetic latch. As the MacBook Pro is wider, it will get very light magnets at either end of the displays too, to hold it neatly shut.

I doubt we'd see the MB first, since that really wouldn't make any sense.

I think we'll just see the MBP as a press release update sometime between now and this event, and then probably an Aperture update at the event, possibly along with other software stuff.

MB updates will probably be some time after.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you might actually want to take a look at the Apple Records logo before you make silly arguments that the Apple Computer logo is a copy.

And as cmaier clearly explained to you, this is a different scenario entirely as they were in two completely different industries at that time.

Oh, and what do the Beatles have to do with partnering technology companies turning around and stabbing their partner in the back? Nothing.

So the Beatles didn't use an Apple? And Woolworths Australia does? Don't be so biased.

Think Steve will still have a beard?

I predict, if he doesn't we'll see a fullscreen ipod, if he does we won't lol :D

This is precisely the kind of reconassiance that rumor websites should be providing. We need to start making serious wagers on the hygenic habits of Apple employees, it is the natural progression of product rumors. I'm talking about sitting in a smokey room, piling cash in the center of a table, greasy hair and big rings type of wagering. I'm talking fantasy rumor line ups.

Apple could blow a hundred million in legal expenses. It's less of an instance of throwing in the towel, and more of an instance of, "You know, the way idiot judges/juries hand out settlements these days, let's just give them a paltry sum, let them think they've won, and still destroy them in the MP3 market."

Not in 20 years, they couldn't. And no matter how often it's said to the contrary, $100 million is still very serious money.

Reminds me of 1997, when Microsoft was forced to invest $150 million in Apple as part of a settlement of a patent lawsuit, a lot of people couldn't wrap their minds around the idea that Microsoft had actually lost. They did then. Apple did today.

Yes I am. And fairly new to Apple (switched to Mac in 2006 and iPhone in 2007).

Does being new here mean that I have to learn how a corporation that just recorded at record net income of $5.23 billion is "DEAD"? If so, please enlighten me.

I have worked in finance for 35 years and only hold a Bachelors degree in Buisiness, but I'm sure from your response that you (and others here) know more about business than me. So please explain how the earnings report is an indication of impeding doom.... I'm always willing to learn from a group of experts!

Typical Arts student! come back when you're qualified in Science or Engineering and tell us how manufacturing products that are worth selling works.

Even the MBA crowd are appalling at their supposed specialty subject of business - that's just a euphemism for people who don't want to add value to something, but are skilled at counting the cost and value of things and are second only to accountants at removing the soul of a business in the name of making money.

Oh yeah - you said it - qualified in "buisiness" [sic] but works in finance - surely that should read - holds some form of accountancy degree and is an accountant? No? under-qualified then. (or clerk)
