This is being led by the UK and France... Obama has been dragging his feet.

    http://www.france24.com/en/20110318-cameron-sarkozy-lead-no-fly-zone-effort-libya-benghazi

Doesn't seem to stop Obama from going on TV to claim credit though.

Did I miss something in that link? It just says UK and France were taking the lead, nothing about Obama "dragging his feet"...considering the number of forces the US has around the globe, I welcome this UN usage of force not being lead by the US.

Really confused as to why they just didn't skip to Core2.

probably supply reasons and cost reasons.

if they bumped it to core 2, at least the base model would still have been core duo, the c2d one would have been more expensive, and i'm willing to bet we may see the 1.83 C2D in more than just the 17" imac soon.

It seems like there is so many iPod ideas floating around. Full video iPod, wireless iPod, iPhone. Why not put it all into one machine. I mean it is Apple. They can do what they want.

I think it's stupid for Apple to have "App Store" as a trademark. It is too generic. Trademarks, like patents, are out of control.

However, the same thing can be said for "Windows" and "1-Click". So, if "App Store" is to be invalidated, then these other trademarks should be invalidated as well, not to mention a whole host of other trademarks that can be considered "too generic".

    Pot meet Kettle.

That price tag doesn't seem so ridiculous.

When was the last time final cut pro was available as a stand-alone app? Seems like last time I considered getting it, it was only available as part of the $1k suite. So $299 easily seems like a more reasonable entry fee than buying Final Cut Studio.

OK, so apparently you don't have experience with automatics...

But yet you have an opinion on how superior your choice of manuals is.

Yes, obviously the thick sarcasm and the pointing out of P R N D 2 1 means I've never stepped in and driven an automatic ;) I was kidding about not knowing how to drive automatic if it still isn't clear.

Really, is there even someone who doesn't know how to drive an automatic ? It's pretty self-explanatory, not much of a learning curve shifting from Park to Drive and hitting the gas. Of course, if one were to put it in Neutral not much would happen and Reverse is a very bad thing if you're looking to go forward.

I think we have a winner for the "humor impaired post of 2011".

I feel that coupes should be manual and the rest autos, except for 2 door suvs (wrangler, D90). Just my opinion.

Coupes are just awkward. Give me a good hatchback or wagon anytime. The agility of a coupe, the interior room of a light SUV.

Subaru doesn't make coupes, that should tell you something. No need to sacrifice all that interior space to get a sporty feel. Heck, a WRX feels much sportier than a damn Hyundai Tiburon and is much more convenient to boot (god I miss that car... stupid TS wagon I'm stuck driving these days...).

Touch interfaces don't NECESSARILY mean touchscreen interfaces.

The Magic Trackpad — http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/07/apples-magic-trackpad-or-magic-slate-revealed/ — would allow for multi-touch on desktops, enabling many iOS applications to be used on a desktop computer (and obviously laptops could do the same thing with their trackpads).

There are lots of ways this could be useful. For example: touch input in a desktop environment could be useful for manipulating or selecting MULTIPLE buttons/sliders/whatever independently, and at the same time — which you can't do with a mouse.

With Macworld San Francisco (MWSF) quickly approaching, MacRumors provides this Rumor Roundup as a summary of major rumors circulating around the Mac Web before the big event. (Previous MacRumors MWSF roundups: 2006 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060105230546.shtml), 2005 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/01/20050110022542.shtml), 2004 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/01/20040101213714.shtml), 2003 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/01/20030104183532.shtml), and 2002 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/01/20020106151501.shtml).)

While Apple's popularity continues to rise, the media coverage for Apple rumors reached an all time high this year.

    Apple Phone (or Not?)

The one rumor that has received the greatest exposure is, of course, the Apple branded phone (formerly the iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061218064022.shtml)). Talk of an Apple-branded cell phone has been ongoing for years, however.

In when asked directly (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/09/20020911210852.shtml) "Will there be an iPhone?", Steve Jobs replied "One never knows. We don't usually discuss products we haven't announced." In when questioned again about an Apple phone, Steve Jobs stated (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030529030024.shtml) that they did not "feel they could add much value to current cell phones."

The Apple Phone rumor flickered to life again in February 2006 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/02/20060203203837.shtml) when research group UBS said "not to rule out an Apple-branded cell phone later this year". PiperJaffray made a bolder statement (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060317152445.shtml) in March 2006 with a 75% chance of a iPhone in the next 12 months. Similar claims came from a J.P. Morgan analyst (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060319140832.shtml) that "chatter about the [Apple Phone] is all over the food chain".

What finally triggered worldwide attention can be traced back to this Commercial Times report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061115090741.shtml) that Taiwan's Hon Hai has received a 12 million unit contract for the rumored Apple phone to be released in the first half of 2007. While regular MacRumors readers might realize that these Taiwanese supply reports have been wrong in the past, the proposed time-frame correlated (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060915182716.shtml) with an earlier ThinkSecret report also pointing to "early 2007" for the release. As well, a reliable MacRumors source provided a description (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060913215342.shtml) (and artist rendition) of what one of the existing prototype phones looked like at that time.

The first detailed specs came from Kevin Rose (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061203094854.shtml) who had been previously known (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060110081233.shtml) to have some inside information. Other (conflicting) claims/specs are also listed here:

    - 2GB ($249), 4GB ($449), Slide out keyboard, "cool" OS, All Phone providers (Kevin Rose (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061203094854.shtml))
    - 4GB ($599), 8GB ($649), Metal, Cingular Wireless, Full screen LCD, Virtual Click Wheel (Morgan Stanley analyst (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061213162456.shtml))
    - GSM/EDGE device only (ThinkSecret (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061215091228.shtml))

While many news outlets are pointing towards Macworld San Francisco as the launch date of the Apple Phone, none of the more credible rumors have specifically pointed to Macworld as the launch day for the device:

    - 1st half of 2007 (1 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061115090741.shtml), 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060915182716.shtml), 3 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061205105051.shtml), 4 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061213162456.shtml))
    - Not at Macworld SF (1 (http://www.theage.com.au/news/phones--pdas/iphone-could-be-put-on-hold/2006/12/11/1165685598310.html?from=rss))
    - January (1 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061203094854.shtml))
    - Macworld San Francisco (0)

While nothing would preclude Apple from announcing a phone at Macworld for a later launch, the evidence for a Macworld launch remains mostly speculative.

    Mac Pro

Appleinsider suggested in October (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061025231946.shtml) that an 8-Core Mac Pro was ready to launch as early as November 2006. While this did not take place, an upcoming 2.0GHz quad-core chip (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2326) due in January will be priced at a reasonable $690/chip, similar to the current 2.66GHz dual-core Woodcrest that is currently offered in Mac Pros.

A recent Macscoop report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061229234528.shtml) claimed that the 8-core Mac would be on track for a January release.

    iTV

Apple surprised many when they revealed the iTV in September (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060912161621.shtml) at the "Showtime" media event. The $299 device offers a living room appliance that interfaces your media content to your television. A brief overview was provided, but the final shipping product was not promised until the first quarter of 2007.

Many expect Apple will provide more details of the iTV at Macworld.

    Leopard

Leopard was first previewed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060807161421.shtml) in August, revealing Time Machine, Spaces, Core Animation, and more (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/).

Over the following months, only a few additional features have been revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061024174114.shtml), and no word of the "secret" features Apple has held back from their public preview.

The latest minor feature revealed has been the use of XAR (http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2006/12/30/macos-x-10-5-new-package-format-xar.html) for Leopard's package format.

Apple would likely demonstrate Leopard again at Macworld San Francisco, but the final release is not expected until "Spring 2007".

    New Displays

Some sporadic reports (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061222114846.shtml) of new displays have been distributed, but have been tainted by claims that they represent efforts to intentionally spread false information to rumor sites. As such, these rumors should be viewed with skepticism.

    iLife '07

Unlike most Apple updates, the iLife suite has seen regular yearly updates released at the Macworld San Francisco expo. iWork '07 has been said to include (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061011213410.shtml) significant updates to Keynote and Pages as well as the introduction of a new spreadsheet application code named "Lasso".

    Video iPod, and Others?

Surprisingly, little attention has been given to the rumored full Video iPod despite clear evidence (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061026073133.shtml) that Apple has been considering such a form factor. The latest word has placed the device in the early 2007 timeframe (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061018143033.shtml).

Three new iPod models were said to be in the works (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061207145756.shtml) for but not necessarily at Macworld.

    Summary

Surprisingly few Macworld San Francisco specific rumors have emerged this year in the months leading up to the event. This final week, however, always represents a busy time for rumors with last minute leaks common.

If you would like to meet up with other MacRumors members, this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=256873) lists others going to the event.

No live Quicktime stream is typically available for the keynote event. Instead, we will provide live coverage of the event at MacRumorsLive.com (http://www.macrumorslive.com/). The keynote takes place at 9am Pacific time on January 9th, 2007.

The gist of the statements currently coming from UN-mandated coalition members seems to be that once that "all necessary measures" have been taken to protect Libyans under attack by Gaddafi loyalists, the coalition military will simply seek to maintain that protection. Any political progess from that point on will have to be negotiated between Gaddafi, the Arab League, and the UN.

It will be important to get the Arab League onboard, but just now they are pretty distracted with internal instability and rarely agree on anything anyways. They neither want to keep Gaddafi around nor show him the door.

I agree ... interesting progress this UN decision has become, the Arab partners seem to now be on the fence.

Getting Gaddafi to step down seems like a logical solution ... however that may not happen if he tries to all of a sudden play ball a bit.

After following all this stuff today, I am really concerned about whateverthehell it is that will be announced next week. There seems to
be limited interest in movie downloads, when there are already good alternatives (netflix, the local video shop, etc.) There are definitely some
questions if that would/will even fly. I, for one, don't really care if I rent. I have a bunch of DVD movies, but rarely view them more than twice. So... even though an apple movie download service comes along, I really wonder how successful it will be. Which leads me to wonder... The Steve is not dumb. He is not going to order up a special meeting like this for something that may turn out to be nothing... Hell, it is apparently viewed by apple as much more important than the introduction of the 24" iMac, which is a heck of an interesting gadget. Do you think that there may be some REALLY BIG new technological/hardware gizmo being intro'd? Something that makes the movie store just a minor part of a larger picture. I keep thinking, Apple is a hardware company. Always has been. SHOW ME THE HARDWARE!

Agreed! On-Demand is the future for movies. It just needs more of a selection then it's perfect.

Downloading movies is of limited interest to most people. Just give up the Mac Media Center (iHome) and we'll all be happy campers come Tuesday!

Wireless controllers for iPad and TV dock or something please.

Actually, I don't think there's any reason someone couldn't develop a way to use a PS3 controller with an iOS device. It would probably take some work, and Apple wouldn't allow it in the App Store, but I don't see why it can't be done right now. I mean, I use a PS3 as a mouse for my TV Mac Mini.

I just saw this and though it was pretty interesting:

Sony also introduced their own small-format 90.0 94.0 mm disk, similar to the others but somewhat simpler in construction than the AmDisk. The first computer to use this format was the HP-150 of 1983, and Sony also used them fairly widely on their line of MSX computers. Other than this the format suffered from a similar fate as the other new formats; the 5-inch format simply had too much market share. Things changed dramatically in 1984 when Apple Computer selected the format for their new Macintosh computers. By 1989 the 3-inch was outselling the 5-inch.
    Here is the source:
    Sony's 3.5" Floppy Disk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_drive#The_3.C2.BD-inch_microfloppy_diskette)

hopefully this 23 inch one adds something more than just a bigger screen....such as component RGB input which would allow me to hook my my xbox 360 to play. that would RULE.

    of course, that is unlikely.

does anyone actually know how to use iMac screen to play xbox 360?

You can already play your Xbox 360 on your iMac, just not in high def. Buy an EyeTV TV adapter that has the game mode, and you can play that way. The best input available on there is an Svideo connection, so you want get HD, but it's still a pretty crisp picture.

Okay, stupid question, sort of related.

I'm running optibay on my MBP (SSD & HDD with SSD split running my apps and OS, and then Win7, and my HDD acting as my storage drive for my media).... when I install Lion how crazy is that going to get?

I HIGHLY doubt (but do hopelessly hope [yes, I know]) that it'll be as easy as swapping my snow leopard with Lion... meaning that my Win7 will remain.... although for some reason I feel that I'll need to format the entire SSD, thus erasing my win7 install?

The only reason I ask is that it's a pita to install Win7 with this setup due to Win7 not loading from disk via USB... so I have to remove the damn optibay and put my optical drive back in.

So basically, I assume I have to re-link my OSX (as it's split now between ssd and hdd)... but do I have to erase my Win7 install as well on the SSD?
