    Apple, please,

BRING BACK THE MAC CUBE concept!

A small yet powerful Mac. But this this at a REASONABLE price, to be a best-seller.

    Thanks.

You might just get your wish; I saw this article/link while surfing over the MacNN website a couple of days ago (I'm still waiting for new MBPs myself, though! :( ):

    http://www.electronista.com/articles/06/09/08/new.apple.cube.patent/

Hope this isn't old news for everyone; this is my first post, although I've been following the forums ever since I started thinking about replacing my old Powerbook (should finally have the money by next month!).

Napa is the hardware-platform, composed of Yonah, Intel Mobile 945-chipset and Intel Pro Wireless. AKA third generation Centrino. And since the CPU used in that platform is 32bits, the platfom can be called a 32bit platfom. Note: this has nothing to do with the bitness of the logic-board. Napa64 (or rather: Santa Rosa) is Fourth generation Centrino that uses Merom and new chipset.

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Forum/tm.asp?m=126194&mpage=1&key=&#126194

"Santa Rosa is currently developed by Intel as successor of the current "Napa" platform. Napa will receive a 64-bit refresh in September of this year ("Napa64") to support the launch of the Merom processor. Napa64 will be replaced by Santa Rosa in the first or second quarter of 2007.

Compared to Napa and its Calistoga chipset, Santa Rosa and the Crestline chipset will not be just an evolutionary update, but bring several new features to the user."

There is no "Napa chipset". Like I said, Napa is a hardware-platfom...
My bad, thanks for the correction. Obviously I've been talking about the 945 (Calistoga) chip.

However, isn't Napa a "set of chips"? There's no "Napa chip", but there is a Napa chipset. Since Apple isn't using the Centrino brand, it's probably not a Napa platform per se.

So all Greenpeace did was hand out leaflets in areas other than their stand...

Heck, every trade show I ever go to has girls with their tits half hanging out wondering the halls handing out leaflets nowhere near their particular stand.
Yes, when you are a vendor at a show there are strict rules. It's in the contract. If you purchase a booth you have to stay in that booth, period. Booths are available on first come first serve basis usually with returning vendors getting the right of first refusal for booths they have held previously. The ends and large booths near foot traffic are more expensive and they command a higher price. Some shows, fewer today than before, allow for "cigarette girls" or "strollers" but the vendor pays for this as they would for any other perksand they are not cheap. They are generally given a specific time period in which they may walk the floor (if in costume they need a chaperone). They are not allowed to transact business but hand out "freebies". According to the story Greenpeace only signed up for a booth. All contracts I have seen say you'll get thrown out if you don't obey the rules.

It seems like if you can't beat them join them.

But it would kind of make sence for Apple and Creative to make this disappear ASAP with a paltry gesture and "join" forces in the iPod war against Microsoft and the other crappy non-iPod players out there.....

Still lovin' my 2009 iMac.... best machine I've ever owned.

I'm with you! This gas been a great computer with few, if any, problems for me. I think I'll wait awhile so they can get HDs at a decent price that can hookup to Thunderbolt. I seem to run quite well at the speed I have now. Any increase wouldn't be noticed since I rarely encode videos.

    macpro dead in 2 years...my prediction:mad:

We were discussing this a few threads down the front page.

Doubt the MacPro will be dead, but the market for it will shrivel up very badly unless some universal need for extreme processing is manufactured. With current processing speeds and ThunderBolt accessories, an iMac can become a full pro machine for all sorts of jobs that don't need to work titanic piles of data.

This Pro I purchased in early 2007 is still excellent. It will last until 2014 or beyond, and by that point I will probably go with an iMac. Today's iMacs are already faster than this tower in most ways.

Also, android has free anti-virus scanners available in there market. Apple may have some too. I think mcafee is just trying to sell product, but if I was them i would want to sell my product to EVERY person who had Android or iOS based phone, simply because that is a VERY large user base.
I am constantly amazed at the number of people who buy into this crap!

Here, I'll try to spell it out for you:
Apple has no antivirus for IOS because it would be completely useless. In order for a virus to get through to an IOS device it has to get past Apple's reviewers. That's the only way to install software of any kind on IOS, including malware.

Wasn't there supposedly a "virus" going around for the Mac on Facebook a couple months ago? And it was supposed to be all doom and gloom for the Mac (so I've read in the forums from doom-sayers)......but, I haven't heard anything about it since, because nothing happened......this is pretty much the same thing.

Yes, the Core Duo (Yonah) is a mobile chip. The Core 2 Duo equivalent is Merom.

What? You said the word Merom but didn't include a link to the guide? :p

Well anyways, if Apple could get Conroes into iMacs it would be great. A challenge I know (and I still personally think it is more likely to be a Merom iMac) but it would help to be that little bit more competitive. The rest is pretty much predictable, Merom for MBPs and eventually MacBooks and Mac Minis. Woodcrest for Mac Pro and MacServe (Macs in everything right ;) ). iMac's future is a big ?.

This is a good thing in my opinion, better for the environment, and technology is taking us in directions that we not have been able to imagine years ago.

I pity the children of the future when I think back to how I am my friends used to swap Video's, CD's and Computer games with each other, as we only had enough Birthday/Christmas money to afford to buy so much, so we had great fun and enjoyment swapping what we had between friends.

In the same way my elderly mother goes to her weekly meeting and they all bring books they have read in, so others can read their books when they have finished with them. Not everyone can afford to buy new every time.

Thank you, Greenpeace. Public awareness is what it's all about. If Apple does not like it, maybe it's time to shape up and actually try to live up to the "environmentally friendly" image that they have been trying to create.

    Slightly?

    Samsung is a huge Conglomerate.

In fact they built one of these.

I'm well aware of that, but many here have no idea that Samsung is much bigger than Apple.

Apple needs to be more revolutionary than just offer this rather lame iPod update... but I'm sure that is coming. Most of it is just software - except for the brighter screen and larger resolution.

Does the updated iPod software for old 5G also give the search function - that would be very useful.

    What are the games like?

I think its very telling that Jobs closed the Showtime event by saying:

"Apple is in your den, living room, car, pocket. I think you see where we are going with this."

Is he saying that Apple's plan is to be everywhere?
Probably, and a cell phone certainly completes that plan.

I just watched the stream. Not before Christmas. Jobs made it pretty clear that these updates and new iPods are the holiday product line up.

That's just sad. Incredibly, incredibly sad.

Guess I'll go hit ebay for a 4th gen 20 gig since the 5th gen offers nothing new (4:3 2 inch screen video playback is not a "feature") and this 'update' offers even less.

I'd be surprised if Apple sells HALF the number of iPods this holiday season vs. last.

Hurf. There was a checkbox for installing a trial version. You didn't uncheck it.

Maybe this is why you're using OSX then. It makes choices for you. Not yours, but you know...
That's the point, this things should be Opt-In, not Opt-0ut, in other words you need to check it if you do want it.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to start a new wireless plan without a contract? I mean, the whole idea of the contract is to cover the phone subsidy, but if I don't want a new phone do I still have to get one?

I've been considering switching to Cingular since I don't get any signal at all in my workplace with T-Mobile (the higher GSM frequency has trouble going through thick walls) but Cingular works great.

I haven't been on a contract in about 5 years now, and I don't want to get back on one again, which is part of the reason I've stayed with T-Mobile.
There may be some plans out there that you can start up without a contract, but the problem with carriers now days is that they're slowly phasing out 0-month term contracts, they still exist, but it can be hard to find, when I was working with an evil US based CDMA carrier a year ago, there was only one plan offered that you could purchase without a contract. You can always call up Cingular customer service and ask them yourselves (for comparisons) if you want, that's what they are there for (but watch out, they'll be greedy and try to sign you up then and there, to make their commission).

Here in Canada, with the "only" GSM carrier we have (you Canucks know it's only 1 in reality!) only allows the use of plans with a contract, usually in increments of 2 or 3 years (even 1 year contracts are starting to get hard to get). Not fun.
