    Personally I'm a huge fan of daisy chaining. Less devices, less cables, less clutter. You just attach each device to the next.

    What is it you have an aversion to?

    What if I need to pull a drive somewhere in the chain but I'm still accessing a device farther along the chain? Daisy chaining is a *massive* pain for anyone who deals with external devices that aren't permanently, or at least semi-permanently, hooked up to a single machine!

    If it were OK to remove the optical drives they would have already done so.

    They are fighting against Blu-Ray. But that's where the notebook market has already moved into.

    The MacBook Pro design hasn't changed since 2008. I'd bet money that the next time they do a redesign an optical drive won't be present.

    Wow, it seems the majority of posters here are immediately questioning the security guard for shooting a bunch of criminals! I guess he should have been more polite, and given the criminals the chance to shoot him first! Or to run off and try to rob an honest business another time!

    America used to be a country of strong, self-reliant people that would have absolutely no problem with taking down violent criminals *asap*. They would have no tolerance for thuggery, and the result is that there would be far less of it! Now America is filled with a bunch of lambs, who've become so "civilized" that they've lost the instincts needed to confront bullies. Instead, they round themselves up in the pens of a police state, where they leave the unpleasant business of personal defense to "professionals" (the police). And then they whine when the professionals don't do enough to protect them, or start to prey upon them because they *are* so weak.

    This is what happens when earlier generations make a country strong, but are replaced by their children who merely inherit a strong country, with no idea how to maintain it.

    There's only one appropriate course of action with thieves and criminals like the ones described in the article: give them one chance to surrender (not to quit and go home, but surrender), and if they don't take it, then shoot them. Not only is that justice, but it also discourages other criminals far more than the potential for jail terms ever could.

    I'll post.

    The primary objection of studios to iTS (iTunes Store) is not rental vs. ownership. It is pissing off its physical channel "partners".

    Steve Jobs has a history of pissing off physical channel partners. When the online Apple Store was vastly enlarged and promoted, the value added dealers lost premium CPU and software sales to Apple itself, since they have a price fixing contract. Consumers were no worse off ordering direct with free shipping than going down to a dealer if they did not need advise for the product purchase. In addition many asked questions of local dealers then purchased online thereafter.

    This was further an issue when Apple added their own dealer network (stores) which were to a large degree competing with the long-standing dedicated dealer network as well as the mass merchandising dealers, who have been really hit and miss over the years. That has resulted in low mindshare as compared to Apple and indy dealers who people at least KNOW have the stuff if they are inclined toward those channels.

    Studios rely on physical store dealers for "impulse sales" which has a different character than online. If you are in the online store software or website, it tries to cross-sell you. But retail impulse sales are targeting people who are not shopping for music at all. They just walk by and see it while shopping for something else. The most powerful example of this is Wal-Mart. They sell CD's as a loss leader to generate store traffic of a key range of demographics. So much so, it is Wal-Mart who is pressuring studios to shun iTS, and to a large degree it is actually working.

    Not for long.

    Its also not great for many many many other people. You still base your ideas and arguments on the flawed notion that people have unlimited data and could still get it. I will also state again, I personally believe this will be some kind of add-on locker and not replacing local storage. I believe replacing local storage at this point would be a major mistake on Apple's part because it would negatively affect so many people...granted, not all.

    i'm not ignoring any facts. u are being too technical. i have unlimited data but i use less than 2gb. my point is if u are places and it has free wifi, CONNECT to it...which is what i do at work and at home. streaming does not use a lot of data like you think.

    look at the MBA. obviously it's not a computer for you. Doesn't mean it's not a great option for someone else. Storage is minimal and doesn't have a cd drive at all. This is all my wife and i use for a computer. It works great for us.

    do you see now where the future is going with minimal hard drive space and no cd drive???

    when ur at ur home you'd be connected to wifi so usage wouldn't be a problem. i don't know why anyone pays for the $15/month plan that's a complete ripoff to begin with.

    My wife and I both opted for the 200MB plan because our usage over the previous year never exceeded that amount (and often never got close) even while on vacation and using Maps. Therefore paying twice that, or more, for unlimited usage is/was a waste of $. For two iPhones that saved $360/yr which is substantial for us.

    If the Apple service works like DropBox to sync all my music on all my iTunes/iPod devices AND is only active over WiFi, then I will probably make use of the service since it would essentially be the wireless syncing for which many have been asking.

    As an on-the-go music stream over cell service it is useless to me.

    i saw this being filmed while on lunch this afternoon. The GAP that's about a block away from the Apple store was wrapped in a bunch of (RED) garbage too.

    Bono, Oprah, GAP, and APPLE...

    The world is going to be turned upside down.

    Several news outlets are confirming (http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/09/05/showtime/index.php) the media event that Apple is holding on September 12th 2006.

Meanwhile, Appleinsider feels (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904194920.shtml) a new video streaming device will also be introduced. Meanwhile, Core 2 Duo iMacs (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060901123538.shtml) and new iPods (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904073025.shtml) are also expected.

    Because I am going to. I'm a completely safe driver (even when doing 90 or above) until I run into some dunderhead who has to enforce the speed limit themselves. Had that woman just moved like everyone else did, I would have never had to cut her off in order to punish her. And yes I did have to punish her, because she needed to be taught her dang place on the road.

    -Don

    Sure, your entire post just screams at what a safe driver you are. :rolleyes:I bet if your parents saw a post like this they would take away your car. You are a menace.

    EDIT: Saw your edit. If your mom is encouraging this type of behavior, neither one of you should be considered a safe driver.

    HD is not going to happen, at least not next tuesday.I can't see Steve releasing anything but HD if it's meant to be viewed on a big screen. If there isn't a new 48-inch screen or a way to get the movies to a Hi-Def television I would then venture to guess they'll keep the resolution the same as it is currently :cool:

    I do recall a particular Camera app in the AppStore that was VERY VERY popular just 3months ago that took address book information and served it out to a server! This got through your "moderated app store" with complete ease and remained available for quite a few months before being pulled (both the store and during sync as well).
    As instances of such things occur more and more often, I imagine Apple will tighten their look on the app store, putting each submission and new update through rigours tests to find such things.

    And that aside... imagine that camera app being available for Android. It will never get removed and will be freely available to install.

    Apple is starting to be less and less inovative. The iPhone UI hardly changes for the last 4 years. But hey, lets sue everybody.:rolleyes:
    If it ain't broke, don't fix it. iOS 5 will fix anything that's trailing and then we'll see everyone follow Apple's footsteps again.

    Wouldn't you be annoyed if someone took an essay of yours and copy/pasted it with a few tweaks? Same principal.

    2012... 18 month update cycle? Far, far too long. No way... If that's the case, for the first time in 27 years, Apple doesn't get my money.

    Have you paid any attention to the upgrade cycle since the switch to Intel for the Pro Towers?

    It will be either one of two things:

    1 - ONLY the iTMS Movie Store and perhaps updated Nanos;

    2 - The BIG ONE, the EARTHQUAKE we've been all waiting for...

    2a - iTMS Movie Store;
    2b - updated Nanos and iPods;
    2c - 23" iMac Special DVR Edition with Merom;
    2d - Wireless music sharing device for the Nanos as shown by the FCC filing;
    see https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=661453&native_or_pdf=pdf
    2e - Updated MBs and MBPs.

    I would figure in the meantime they would continue to sell products in areas that they are not restricted. Oh well.

    They would.If you've checked out the iSight it has a ship date of October.

    My guess is they stopped making them in order to redesign them.And since they have to redesign them why not make them better.wink...wink...nudge...nudge..;)

    Oh God yes this is what I want.

    I've read where iTunes 7 supports multiple libraries, but it's not the solution we're waiting for.

    I want to rip a CD onto my powerbook and have iTunes sync it with a master library on a partition of my external drive next time I hook it up. Right now, I'd have to remember to copy the new files onto the external... no good—I want it to be automatic and just work (Apple has spoiled me).

    It's called 'rsync', and it's one of the BSD utilities built into OS X.

    If you either have a really small library, or money to burn (on .Mac and the storage upgrade; but even then, only up to 4 GB,) you could use .Mac as your library storage, and just have Automatic iDisk sync turned on.

    edit: I know I saw something about how to trick your computer into thinking another computer on your network is the .Mac server, which would let you use all of the current .Mac functions hosted locally; this would work great for an 'iDisk-hosted' library. As long as you don't ever connect to a different internet connection, and it tries to sync with the real iDisk.
